Your hosts Bill & Angie Herlocker invite you to stay with them and enjoy the elegance and charm of the Captain's Castle. The very first time the Herlockers visited Jefferson they fell in love with the town, its relaxed pace and its immediate connections to almost 200 years of history. The decision was made. They found their own Bed & Breakfast and started building their lives here. You will experience first-hand the romance of this wonderful little historic town.
Angie and Bill Herlocker bought Captain's Castle in September, 2010. They had come to Jefferson for a short get-away from their home in Winnsboro, Texas, just an hour and a half away. They stayed a night in one of our B&Bs and fell in love with the town. They immediately started looking for a place of their own. They had never before run a B&B. In fact, they had never before spent a night in a Bed & Breakfast. But they ended up buying Captain's Castle and started immediately to refurbish the entire residence. Refurbishing a 160-year old home is a never ending project. The needs of an old structure and their own enthusiasm and desire to provide the very best for their guests inspires Angie and Bill to keep working, keep improving, and continue beautifying this historic complex.
Their instant love affair with Jefferson is striking but not at all unique. Like the Herlockers, some people fall in love with Jefferson instantly. There is every likelihood that your first visit here will captivate you and keep you coming back as often as possible. There is a tangible historic presence throughout Jefferson. Walking the downtown sidewalks or sleeping in an antebellum home is less like tourism and more like an emergence in 1840's history. You may be drawn to move here. Many people are.
Angie and Bill moved their family and settled in to this community. Natural outgoing personalities helped them connect with people in town just as it helps them connect with their guests. Angie is a warm, smiling presence and is always anxious to provide any small thing to make your stay more pleasant. Bill is a great story teller. His gentle ramblings can sooth away the harshness of modern life and bring guests back to the civilized world of Jefferson's heydays, 1840 – 1870.
Everyone in Jefferson is an amateur historian. A few are devotees to the craft of uncovering Jefferson's history. Angie and Bill have already absorbed a great deal of knowledge and are happy to tell tales of days gone by.
The Herlockers are regular folks. They make no pretence of glamour or aloofness. If you show an interest in communicating they will be quite happy whiling away the hours over warm drinks or cool lemonade. They like people. But you will find that they seem to know in advance just what type of experience you want during your stay. If you want quiet, alone time you will have it without needing to ask. If you want company and new friends you will find your innkeepers to be warmly communicative.
Angie and Bill Herlocker are all too aware of the hardships of life and have overcome many of their own. Their survival and their road to Jefferson leaves them with such easy going personalities that you might think them untouched by life's troubles. But if you are interested, they have remarkable life stories to tell and are happy to share.
